Paradise is first and foremost a beautiful picture.

-Gaston Bachelard

Mark Atkinson is a photographer whose work spans contemporary digital photography, film photography, and historic photographic processes. Raised in Rockport, Massachusetts, a community long associated with the arts, he developed an early appreciation for creativity and the natural beauty of coastal New England.

A school psychologist by profession, Mark's training has shaped the way he observes the world, helping him recognize subtle relationships between people, place, light, and atmosphere. Having spent much of his life between Massachusetts and California, he draws inspiration from both coastal and mountain landscapes, with a particular affection for clouds, fog, and seasonal change.

While he continues to work in digital and film photography, his current focus is photographic salt printing, one of the earliest photographic processes, dating to the 1840s. Using hand-coated papers, traditional chemistry, and digital negatives, he creates individually crafted prints that combine contemporary image-making with the rich traditions of photographic history.

Through all of his work, Mark is drawn to images that invite a slower pace of looking and a deeper appreciation for place, atmosphere, and the enduring craft of photography.
